Every sweep includes

More than a brush up the flue.

  • Smoke draw test
  • Visual inspection of the stack, pot and cowl (if applicable)
  • Check to ensure the ventilation requirements for the appliance are suitable
  • Visual inspection of the fire place or stove to check for faults
  • Issuing of a certificate

Your certificate of sweeping is worth keeping safe. Most insurance companies will no longer pay out for claims made due to chimney fires unless the chimney has been swept by a professional chimney sweep who issues a valid certificate.

About

My name is Les Bowering.

As a member of the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps, you receive the services of a fully trained and experienced sweep, who has been observed and assessed at customers' properties to ensure that the highest standards are maintained, and has taken a rigorous examination to show a working knowledge of building regulations and safety requirements. That is why I am authorised to issue appliance certificates.

As a Guild member, I am obliged to provide public liability insurance and am required to carry a superior level of equipment compared to many non registered sweeps, such as HEPA filtered industrial vacuum cleaners and specialised types of rods and brushes. Through the Guild, I have access to a wealth of knowledge and technical advice to help solve any problems your appliance may throw at us.

Why are we called Green Sweeps?

Many customers ask this, especially as my name is Les Bowering. Well, if I can ensure that your appliance is working efficiently, meaning clean, utilised properly, well ventilated and burning only seasoned wood (a carbon neutral fuel), then your fire will not only be safer and more economical, but better for the environment, and hence Green!

When we moved house, Les generously suggested that we might like to use a nearer sweep to cut on our costs, which we did and never again! I called Les next time chimneys were due and without hesitation he agreed to come that week. He has further advanced his skills and his attention to detail in all aspects of his job are 100%. • Durley Southampton

“It was not until the chimney for our wood-burning stove was swept by Les Bowering that we realised what a thorough sweep of the chimney entails. Les Bowering issues us with a certificate after the job is completed and everything is left clean - no covering up of floor or furniture needed. We recommend him highly for the quality of his work and his helpfulness.”

  • Stockbridge

“I have just moved to Stockbridge after sixty years in Nether Wallop, where I tried about three different sweeps but nobody came near Mr. GRey from Durrington Wells who had retired - until somone suggested Les Bowering, he is without a doubt the nicest, cleanest and most exceptional sweep I have ever met. The house I bought had rooks nests in the chimney - with a cowl on the top, which had been added after the rooks had done their worst. He cleared the whole thing with no mess and even more importantly took the soot and nests away. He is excellent and I couldn't recommend him more.”

Safety advice

Why it matters, in plain words.

Why get my chimney swept?

Regular cleaning will remove soot and creosote, help prevent dangerous chimney fires and ensure a cleaner, more efficient use of your appliance.

Carbon Monoxide and solid fuel safety

Many people think that carbon monoxide only comes from gas appliances, but the truth is that any fuel that burns creates carbon monoxide. Regular sweeping ensures carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases are released safely from your home.

Chimney fires

Thousands of UK homes have chimney fires every year, often due to a lack of regular sweeping. Most insurers want to see a valid certificate of sweeping from a professional sweep.

More information can be found on the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps web site and the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service web site. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service also distribute various safety leaflets.
